AB Adapting the Macdonald's theory for vector-borne infections, we
estimated the Basic Reproduction Number, RO, of HIV among IVD users.
This was done by applying a structured questionnaire to 68 heavy users
of injected cocaine from the city of Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The
observed seroprevalence of this group was 64%. Macdonald defined RO in
terms of entomological parameters, some of which were re-defined for the
injection apparatus. So, the average number of 'bites' inflicted by a
needle per unit of time, a, the proportion of sharing needles among this
group, p, the density of needles as related to the human population, m,
the probability of a needle to get the infection after being used by a
seropositive individual, alpha, the average period of time a positive
individual remains in the IVDU community, 1/r, and the average period of
time a needle remains infective, 1/(alpha + mu), were related to RO, by:
TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. where Nh is the size of the human
population and X(O) is the initial proportion of seronegatives. Our data
resulted in a value of RO = 35.7.
